The nymph stage - I think they are the large milkweed seed bug.

Interesting bug - looks like it has been scarred on a charcoal grill!

I have never seen these either-a wonderful colorful sight. We've had  milkweed Tussock caterpillars completely destroy our milkweed for the past 2 years, but we've seen nothing like this! These  bugs appear to be relatively harmless from what I've read.  Great shot!

Nice find! I always think their bright colours deter predators.
