Yellow Striped Flutterer  Rhyothemis phyllis

A Yellow Striped Flutterer in obelisk pose at Centenary Lakes in Cairns botanical gardens in far north Queeensland.
This pose is used to reduce heat uptake in may species but also seems to be used as a display/territorial pose in some species.  This one seemed to be displaying as it defended the area and constantly returned to this perch.
Like many dragonfly species this one seemed to seek out unattractive perches.

Excellent wing position and obelisk pose. Skimmers always pick perches like this.

Maybe they choose a plain perch so it doesn't compete with their beauty and display, Chris.  :)   Wonderful image, I love the pose and the amazing detail you captured here.
