Has anyone seen the latest documentary from BBC Natural History called 'The Green Planet'? It features this Corpse Flower (Rafflesia sp.). This parasitic plant can take several years to flower, and even then only for a couple of days. So the timing of this was critical. I took this image in western Borneo. It was a very wet day and hiking through the steep terrain of the rainforest wasn't easy. Luckily no one fell! This is the world's largest flower - it can be up to a metre in diameter and as the common name suggests, doesn't smell particularly nice! It is a fascinating plant and well worth the time and effort to see and photograph.

D4s, 18mm, f6.3, ISO6400, fill flash, full-frame.
Regards,

Des

What a rarity not only to find, but for us to see Des. (Have seen the "green planet", so appreciate its rarity and you sharing with us).

Superb shot. Like the flash and composition.

I love to watch anything with David Attenborough presenting and The Green Planet certainly doesn't disappoint! Wonderful composition and stunning shot of this stinking species, Des. A really superb shot and beautifully done.

Fantastic shot for an incredible flower. I can appreciate the effort that went into seeing this and getting such a great photo. So...now I've got to go watch "The Green Planet".!
There is a "captive" corpse flower at Dartmouth College greenhouse. Here is a time-lapse video of it:

It weighs 80 pounds! Not sure if it is exactly the same plant...

Thanks for sharing this rarity. I'm glad I didn't get to smell it though.

The one shown in the YouTube link you posted looks like Amorphophallus titanum. All Rafflesia sp. looks very similar.

Thanks for that info. I guess you know this species!! I didn't go to see the last bloom. Maybe next time. Greenhouse is closed at present.

This is excellent! Best photo I've seen of this plant and one of the only images of a native plant in it's natural environment. Great work!

+1.  Agree with all of Carol's comments. Wonderful use off fill flash to highlight the flower without overpowering it's surroundings.
