Red Indian Fish Pataecus fronto

Red Indian fish found diving at Bare Island , just inside the heads at Botany Bay south of Sydney.

This is the only divesite around Sydney where these fish are regularly found.  They live among the sponge gardens where they are exceedingly well camouflaged and easy to swim straight past.  This one was at a depth of about 14m.  The species is endemic to Australia in the prowfish family - this individual was about 250mm long.

What great find! The contrast against a neutral background works especially well. Great shot, and thanks for sharing info about this rarity.

What an amazing fish! The shape, colour and texture of the skin must enable it to really hide in plain sight. Fascinating image and species, Chris!

Unique looking fish against a background where it is easily distinguishable when I'm sure that's not normally the case. Terrific details well worth clicking for a larger view.
