Red Indian Fish  Pataecus fronto

The elusive Red Indian Fish, from a Bare Island a divesite just inside the entrance to Botany Bay south of Sydney.  This fish blends in with the sponges perfectly and it's unusual to see it in the open like this one.  This one is about 200mm long or so.

They seem to imitate dead leaves and just waft around in the surge, though are quite capable of moving to a spot they want to be, it just looks like they drifted there.  Quite unusual fish their family - prowfishes are endemic to Australia.

Awesome capture of this spectacular fish, Chris!
Is it a deep sea creature?

What a weird and wonderful fish, Chris! It appears almost headless, until you look closely - and amazing with the dorsal fin raised - ( i had to look it up!)

Fascinating!

Wow- amazing shot of an amazing fish! I love how it is situated in the picture, and like Carol, I thought it was only part of a fish in the thumbnail. It almost looks like it's walking on it's fins. I too looked it up, and your photo is the best I've seen!

Thanks all, in answer to KK, this one was found in about 12m of water, apparently found to as deep as 80m. Like many fish, the information available about them is quite limited.
