Pot Bellied Seahorse Hippocampus abdominalis

Pot bellied seahorse, female, that has been on this rock since July last year.  From a dive at Kurnell right near the entrance to Botany Bay south of Sydney.

What a sweet image of this beauty, Chris! I understand these are one of the largest seahorses at up to 14 inches, so particularly interesting to see such a good image. We don't get enough seahorses posted here, so this is a real treat!

Thanks Carol, they are a fair size, but they only get that big I believe in Tasmania.  this one would be about 150mm long or so as you see it without uncurling the tail.  This lady lives on her rock and has two males living on the same rock with her.

Thanks for the additional information, Chris. I have always been fascinated by the different varieties of seahorses.  I find it rather nice that she has her two cohorts to keep her company.  I also find it interesting that various sea creatures can stay in one spot and have all they need brought to them by the ocean! :)

The detail in your larger view is amazing!

Terrific shot, Chris- beautiful clarity and color. And i like the stories too. Does she actually stay anchored on this rock, or move around a bit? Pretty amazing! Congrats on your EP.

Thanks Cynthia!

the rock is about 4m long x 2.5m wide and maybe 1.5 high, maybe a touch larger, they move around to various sponges and other growth on the rock quite readily, some will move to nearby rocks, others just move around the rock.  Sometimes they are in nice position for  a photo, other times not so good.  I was lucky this day as she stretched out in a nice scenic pot.
