Salsify, Tragopogon porrifolius, used to be cultivated for its edible root. 

Although now largely forgotten, this delightful bloom can be found growing wild.

Nikon FX with Sigma 150mm Macro.

A beautiful pop of color against the green b/g. It reminds me of fireworks bursting.

Thanks Tom - locally these flowers were also called "Purpur Bocksbart" - "Purple Goatsbeard".

As it is a rather old cultivated species, I'm sure there are many variations.
