Port Jackson Shark  Heterodontus portusjacksoni

Port Jackson shark (PJ) sitting under an overhang lined with colourful encrusting sponges at Oak Park a dive site near Cronulla south of Sydney, about 10m depth.

These small sharks come inshore to breed in the winter time, the females lay a large spiral egg casing and place it in crevices to hatch.  About a 1 - 1.5m long they are harmless and eat crustaceans and similar prey grinding them up with their teeth.  They lie about under overhangs and in crevices and caves during the day.

What a beautiful portrayal- love the orange sponges and the whole environment. It seems to be looking at you, perhaps? I always wonder about the awareness of such creatures.

Nice light that brings out the contours of the shark. The sponge colors are beautiful.
