It is a Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) :)

Tim already gave you the ID, but for future use you could try bugguide.net. You can join at no charge and then submit photos with info about where and when you saw it and the experts will provide an ID. I have used it several times and have found it to be very helpful.

This butterfly is common here in Australia too. The fine hair in the middle makes it hard to get sharp looking shots of them. You have done well.
