Gray Hairstreak
Strymon melinus

Livingston Co, MI

5D IV
100-400 4.5-5.6 II, extension
1/1,000, f/8
Evaluative -.33
iso 1600

Natural light, hand held, significant crop.

Not a monarch on not a thistle!
Since I've retired and travel more, I've seen hundreds, if not thousands of these guys.  Although they're the most widespread hairstreak in the U.S, I've never before seen one in Michigan; I was thrilled to get this apparently fresh specimen in our yard.

The butterfly looks great, nice perch, pretty soft background.
Gray hairstreaks are widespread, and they have multiple flights, but in my area, you never see great numbers of them. Always a nice find.

Hi

A nice looking butterfly and a pleasant image that's been well composed - I guess the backdrop is not ideal, but imo a slight crop to remove the upper darker area would make the lighter value in this area less distracting to the main star

Either way an enjoyable view

All the best
Matthew
