Originally I had this in a landscape format, much like yesterday's Fritillary shot, but the BG seemed a bit busy.  I'm not thrilled with the distracting oof thistle, either.

Comments and suggestions always welcome.

This is really nice Craig.  I like how it is presented and really like how the proboscis is highlighted. Cheers

Thank you, Leigha.  This was one of a burst, so I chose the one with the best proboscis position.

Great image and comp, very striking.
The brilliant colors on the butterfly and thistle flower, along with the sharp detail of the proboscis, wing, cilia/hair and eye etc, make the OOF foreground thistle visually irrelevant for me. A good example of how breaking a rule or doing it differently is actually better sometimes.

Another beauty-I like the background interest in this one makes for a more unusual shot.

Beautiful! The oof bg purple helps to show off that perfect proboscis and the detail on the butterfly is superb. The oof fg thistle is not a problem, as my eye is drawn straight to the star of the show!

Hi

I like both the active pose and the lighting through the wings - it is certainly an image to be enjoyed

TBH - as presented the OOF bloom does not imo distract

All the best
Matthew
