Very nice. My only criticism is that, at least to my old eyes, the bottom end of the caterpillar is not quite in sharp focus.

Good observation — you are quite correct. This bothered me so much that I almost didn’t post the image, but I really liked the soft focus of some of the milkweed buds. I work very hard on my backgrounds.

The conditions were very challenging — low-level predawn light necessitating a relatively slow shutter speed, and a slight breeze that caused me to make several exposures at each focal point and then select the sharpest image at each focal point for the stacking. Back indoors and after selecting the sharpest “take” of the lower end of the caterpillar, I could see that it was not tack-sharp. I was working from a sturdy tripod, but such are the challenges of focus-stacking in the outdoors rather than the studio. If I were to have a redo, I would use a higher ISO and a faster shutter speed, also more focal points. But alas, the caterpillar moved slightly after the third series of takes. The D850 could have handled a higher ISO without a hiccup. Lesson learned. Thanks for your comment.

Hi

This just made me laugh - I don't really know why, but I just thought it's the muppet show!

More seriously though it is a fun capture and certainly tingled my fancy

Nicely done

All the best
Matthew
