These guys , about 2-4 inches long, are closely related to Sea Horses, and live only off the coast of Australia and Tasmania.

This looks like a Leafy Sea dragon, Sandy, and a very nice shot too! The Weedy Sea Dragon has far fewer 'leaves' (actually skin), is darker and more red/brown in colour with spots on the skin.

Carol - you're correct, thanks - The sign identifying the critter was on the wall between the "leafies" and the "weedies" and I wasn't sure which was which.

Nice, must be small in captivity, they grow to 6-8" in the wild, the ones I saw & shot in Adelaide were all around that mark.
