Lance-tipped Darner
Aeshna constricta

Livingston Co, MI

We've had this property for almost 20 years, and had never seen this species before about 2 weeks ago; today I found this beauty laying eggs in our pond.

5D IV
100-400 4.5-5.6 II
1/200, f/9
Eval +.33
iso 1600
Natural light, handheld, some serious BG darkening in Viveza, significant crop.
Maybe not the most artistic post, but I thought it was pretty neat.  If any of you are old enough to remember, wouldn't this make a great (groovy?) black light poster?

Comments and suggestions always welcome.

Outstanding image!!! Love the dragon. You could probably crop even tighter to eliminate the two blades on the right and a bit from the top.  I remember those days and still have my black light!

Wow- it DOES glow! Great capture and clarity. You must be so pleased to have seen this colorful dragon and caught it laying eggs no less. Gorgeous!

Hi

Quite a splendid find - never witnessed this behaviour myself in real life and I have spent an age looking at times lol

And a fine image too, no complaints here, I would have been delighted to capture this

All the best
Matthew

Thanks, Joe.
I took your advice, liked it, and used that re-work elsewhere, getting a great reception.  I tried editing this post with that version, thought I had it uploaded, but whether it’s my lousy internet here, or just my ineptitude, it’s not working.
Thanks again.

Hi Craig

If you use "Post a Reply" on the top left , when viewing your photo, you can then click on the picture icon (next to the happy face), and put your new version in this thread. Actually, you can also do that with this simpler reply. You might need to downsize the new picture a bit.   Or just put a new version up as a new post.  We aren't supposed to revise an original version that already has comments anyway, as it would make those comments irrelevant. :) Hope that helps.

I really like the second version because now it really showcases the dragon by simplifying the image.

Thanks, Joe, I agree.
Originally I was worried about too much crop, but the shot was sharp enough and I had enough pixels to, I think, make this work.
