This image was hopefully improved by the addition of the light from a tiny flashlight on my key ring. Same exposure as the previous image, 30 sec at f16 in a very dark and dreary wood where this fungi does very well.

The flashlight did a nice job lightening the shadows on the stems - I like this version better.

Hi

I think this image is an improvement upon the original post but not quite what I had in mind re my first suggestion - this shot looks lighter in tonality throughout, and has lost some of the nicely defining shadow areas; especially as the image recedes. A proper flash unit (or reflector) can be used in a more controlled way to highlight subject areas and the natural flash fall off would not effect the more background areas to such an extent. I am trying to explain (very badly probably lol) that flash lighting can be used in a subtle way - my best advise would be to set up a controlled environment and play with flash ratios to visually see the effects - this will explain better than I ever could
