Always nice to find a new orchid species - or in this case - subspecies: Ophrys holosericea subsp. elatior
This relative of the Ophrys holoserica, is resident in the lower Rhine valley between Alsace and Black forest. As these two Ophrys have quite similar flowers, the easiest identification guide, is the time of bloom, which for elation is late June to Sept, way past that of holoserica. In addition, as the name elatior implies, the orchid can be quite majestic, reaching sizes of up to 90cm. T It still early in season, so we look forward to finding a few giants! Image made with Nikon, Sigma 150mm Macro, Sigma TC14 and Canon 500D close up lens. Thanks for stopping by. |
