Jeff, Just a suggestion, but you might want to buy a selfie stick to add some distance.

Very nice, great eye detail. Not too sure how big this snake is but I'd prefer my 300mm f4 for shots like this, you can get 0.5x with a 1.4x and a 25mm tube and be a meter away!
