Photo taken at Laguna Seca Ranch in South Texas.

Nikon D7100, Nikon Micro, Extension Tube, 1/200 sec at f/16, ISO 500.

My Butterfly ID is certainly not the best.  If the ID is not correct, please let me know.  This image was taken using an old Nikon Micro manual focus lens from the 80s.  After using it, I have an even greater respect for the photographer's talents who did everything manually without the assistance of autofocus.

The detail is better if you click on the image.

This is a Giant Swallowtail: http://www.digital-images.net/Images/In ... HS4259.jpg

I googled butterflies of southern Texas and cannot find anything that looks like your specimen. I would contact someone who is an expert in butterflies for your area.

Hi

Certainly not a swallow tail - but still a lovely shot of this chap; I think Tim's nailed the ID, although I am sure Tom will know more about these fellows than I do lol.

Funnily - I still prefer to use manual everything than auto whatever; probably just showing me age though

Thanks for the look

All the best
Matthew

Matthew, There's definitely a learning curve using manual focus on a macro lens with an extension tube.  I can understand why you would prefer manual focus, it's pretty satisfying knowing that the end result depends solely on your skills.
