Update:
I called the local Epson repair center (about 45 miles away). In hindsight I should have done this initially as I got much more insightful information speaking to a repair technician at the center. After describing the problem the tech disagreed with the assessment I received from Epson. In his opinion it was much more likely a printhead issue causing the problem. I tend to agree with his assessment because it was hard for me to understand how magenta got in the wrong tube through the through the Pump Cap Assembly. To replace the printhead would be a minimum of $800, that's with me bringing the unit to him. I queried him about the ability to fix this and resell it and he said they have very low success doing that and he would not be involved in such a transaction. So I guess the trusty old 4800 is bound for the scrapheap. I will post my experience with the new Epson P 800 in a new thread.
