Michael Reichmann seems very impressed with Epson's new printer.

Is this the beginning of a new line of Epson printers?

Yes, they have openly said all of the pro printers will be updated to this new inkset over the next couple of years. Epson teased with a 3880 replacement at WPPI (shrouded under a black cloth, but 17” prints using the new inks displayed above it).

It appears they will finally take the wraps of this printer on the 29th

A little checking has found the ink is outrageously expensive.

Hasn't that always been the case?

Yes it sure has been John but over $30 for 26ml of ink may be a record.

There is a scaling of price/ml based on cart capacity.  For the larger printers (Epson 7900, etc) with tanks of 150ml, 350ml and 700ml the price/ml ranges from about $0.33/ml for the 700ml tanks up to about $0.57/ml for the 150ml tanks. The Epson 3880 with 80ml tanks the price/ml is up to about $0.84/ml.  The P600 has even smaller tanks at 25.9ml capacity and a cost of $1.23/ml.  I wonder what the larger version printers will have for tank size but would suspect that the price/ml will be similar, though likely a bit higher, than the Ultrachrome K3 inks.

It seems like the P600 is quite an ink guzzler. It does self tests that eat up ink and for the moment, those tests cannot be disabled. It may change in future firmware versions though.
Also, the P800 is announced to have that feature of being able to disable the self tests, so it's possible.
