Haleakala Crater - Maui, Hawaii, USA
Minolta Maxxum 9000, 50mm, exposure unrecorded, K64

With Mars being the closest it has ever been (well at least in 60,000 years), I thought I'd post my "Mars" image. This image was taken in 1989 on Kodachrome 64 at the summit of Haleakala, the large volcano that makes up the eastern portion of the island of Maui. The interior of this crater is larger than the island of Manhattan. I always thought that this is what Mars would look like if I got to go on a Mars Photo Workshop ;)

Unbelievably beautiful, E.J.! The warm colors, espeically off the clouds are so well captured...really out of this world!
Shoot in RAW because memory is cheap, but memories are priceless.

Great Haleakala image. I know people who would go up there just to watch the sunrise. It would be cool to photograph it someday.

When I was there it was very windy. Too windy for most photography. It looks like it was pretty still when your were there.

Looks like Mars to me. Is Haleakala active? Or is it something else that is creating that orange glow? I have a friend that rode his bicycle from the coast to the top, always wanted to do that.
Thanks for sharing

Nifty "tricks" of the atmosphere...the clouds look like smoke, and the orange dappled light looks like fire :)

Well there's just one clue that kept me from believing this was Mars, and that is all the clouds!! Nice perspective and killer light.

Haleakala is dormant but not extinct.

"...if I got to go on a Mars Photo Workshop." Dress warmly. ;)

Warm colors and clouds are great. Only nit? I'm left wanting to see more.

Nice shot, E.J. I'm headed to Maui on 10/1 and plan on visiting this area. Hopefully, I can get a shot half as nice as yours.

This is really outstanding. You are one of the few photographers that I have seen whose landscapes are as excellent as his bird images.
