Denali-Mt. McKinley -Alaska Range as viewed from Polychrome Pass

A wonderful mountain range that I was able to see with clouds and without clouds on it's peaks, in both instances the view was magnificent, If I recall correctly this is the view from Polychrome Pass, Eons ago this place was covered by Glaciers, Glaciers have been lone gone from this area for many thousands of years, evidence of this is the lack of huge boulders downstream from the snow melt that run down the valley in small and shallow rivulets, which are in turn full of small aggregate consisting of small rounded stones!!, It is now basically a Tundra paradise with the permafrost just a few feet below the surface!!! The beauty of the place is overwhelming to me!!

Wow :!: :!: :!:

This is as Majestic as one can get on our little green earth. A heart stopper in my books.

Framing, exposure, light every thing here is right on.

I hope you have a large print of this in your favourite sitting room Alex.

And here I was "almost" feeling sorry for you with your missed opportunites in Alaska that were out of your control. Hey....forget that sympathy....this gets a "holy excrement" comment. This would be a great mural.....or a wonderful large print wall hanger!!! Awesome shot!!!!

Hey Alex,

Yes, this is from Polychrome Pass .. probably one of the sunniest shots I've seen from there .. you must have had an early start this morning, it's a ways from any of the accommodation places to get here. Very nice shot. How windy was it?

The glaciers aren't gone from here .. in fact there are a number of them hidden up in those valleys. Polychrome Glacier is the best known one.
And those 'small rivulets' are in fact reasonable rivers . try walking across one of them on a toasty summers day.. They're mostly meltwater from the receding glaciers, not snow melt, and that explains why they're such a dirty color. The fine sediment ground up by the glacier literally drowns the river, turning the water a nasty brown/grey. The river that is formed from this drainage is named the the East Fork of the Toklat, "Toklat" being an Athabascan word for 'dirty blond', or 'dishwater' (I've heard several different interpretations on this) .. the bears of the area are known as Toklat Grizzlies, as they have the same dirty blond color fur.

This shot is looking over Mury's Plains, named after Adolf Mury, the biologist who lived near here for years, studying the wildlife, in particular the wolves, of Denali. The range is, I believe, known as the Alaska Range, not the Denali-Mt McKinley Range, this section being referred to as 'the inner range', and the northern section, directly behind you, 'the outer range.' There are, in fact, a number of the huge boulders you referred to, known as 'glacial erratics', strewn on these plains. One, just to the left of this scene, is larger than a 2 story house.

A grand place, to be sure.

Cheers

Carl

Carl, I stand corrected, now I recall it being mentioned as the Alaska Range, our bus driver was very knowledgeable but I rather have you as the driver any day, as well informed as he was he did not gives us that much information, I did not see a single Grizzly on that range, Also what I meant as devoid of glaciers, I was referring to the valley between the ranges, Plus, I did not see any of the large boulders you refer to, but I am sure they are there if you say so, A real pity the few hours I was there, even thou I returned the next day for a second helping , most of my images were captured on the first bus ride the day before, A month would be a very short time for the photo opportunities this place can offer!!!, Thanks for wonderful information!!!

Oh, you haven't seen me drive! :D :D

By the way, I meant grizzlies in the whole region, not just on that area of the range. Most of the grizzlies you see in Denali have a much lighter fur than say the ones down in Katmai/Kodiak .. due largely to the lack of protein in their diet, they don't have the nutrition required to grow such rich dark fur (or so I'm told).

Cheers

Rich, If you have seen what I saw, the images that crossed my eyes and went unrecorded in that marvelous place, it would make any mortal man cry with despair, my mood went from anxious and exited, to short of breath , palpitations and deep depression all in one minute of time!!!
It's a magical place to say the least and we had wonderful light to boot!!!
