Unusual composition. I'm still struggling with it, but I think the centered foreground tree is a bit too dominant here, and the vertical nature of the element makes it somewhat difficult for my eye to explore the otherwise horizontal, somewhat layered nature of the rest of the scene. I reserve the right to change my opinion, however. :)

i'm happy to hear that you're "struggling" with the composition. that's a good sign - you're not afraid to encounter the unexpected or different and run from it, all the while screaming photographic platitudes over your shoulder.

fyi - i shun and eschew the "pretty" and cliche. my most successful images are always "difficult" to deal with. they are never an "easy" read. I want to INVOLVE my viewers, turn on the brain and engender a reaction in a manner beyond the normal "well, isn't that nice".

my images demand that you invest time and intellect (which, of course, drives many viewers away). nevertheless, it's why many of them are hanging on walls. you can return to them again and again for a "new" read.

HINT - to view this image the best way, download it, open it in PS and toggle the "f" key (MAC) to see it against a clean bkgnd free of clutter.
the tree and foreground foliage will emerge from the background in an amazing 3D effect (playing with 2 dimensional space). also notice the two different images within the frame - one on the left side of the tree, one on the right. and there's always the irony of the non restful composition of what would normally be a restful subject when photographed using conventional compositional techniques.

just a thought

Looks like a bright morning too. :) I like the sharp/soft contrast look.

The comp is interesting. The tree is just screaming "look at me" with its centrality.

now you're starting to "get" it.

you need "mental energy" to pull your eyes away from the tree. i never want to sing a lullaby with my images - think of it as Chicago style electric blues.
