The tufa at Mono Lake is actually a dirty, grayish white. But the early morning sun can fix that by bathing it in hues of orange.

In-camera JPEG. I currently just don't have the time to process RAWs (and the backlog is huge).

Great light-so interesting how something dull can be so beautifully transformed. Excellent composition as well.

As you yourself mentioned, the soft light really makes the image stand out. A nicely executed shot!

The tufa formations at Mono lake are amazing. Very nice composition and great light with a complementary sky.

Thank you all for your comments on this picture. They make me feel rewarded, particularly since most of them mention the composition.

I have not been doing much photography over the past two years because I had come to a creative dead end. It made me think a lot about what photography is, what it wants and needs to accomplish, and what is important about it. I eventually arrived at the conclusion that the most important part of a picture is not so much the subject but the composition; that arrangement of lines and shapes complemented by a color harmony. It's what presents the subject and makes it attractive, and even the most spectacular or sensational subject cannot compensate for a poor presentation.

So I practiced a lot, often just using my phone, and sometimes even ignoring the subject. I often surprised myself with the results I got by really paying attention to the composition. I then decided to replace the ball head on my tripod with a geared pan head and went to Mono Lake for a tryout. Your reaction to the result confirms that I am on the right path and encourages me to continue on that way.

Thank you again for the great help you gave by just typing a few words. Much appreciated.
