A relic from the last ice age, Castle Butte is a 230 foot tall freestanding structure of sandstone and clay formed by the erosion of glacial meltwater. It is located in the Big Muddy Badlands of southern Saskatchewan.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Big Muddy Valley was a frequented stopping area on the northern end of the 'Outlaw Trail', a series of trails from Mexico to Canada utilized by many American outlaws like Sam Kelly and the Sundance Kid.
