'Sunwapta' is a word from the Indigenous Stoney language meaning 'turbulent water'. It is a perfect description of these falls, which drop over 60 feet into the pool below.

This morning revealed a rare mixture of beautiful light, mist, fog, and low clouds flowing through the mountain valley.

Equally rare is the perfect left/right symmetry of the island, trees, river, and falls, unlike any scene I have witnessed before.

Nature in perfect harmony.

Nikon D850, Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8, ISO64, 24mm, f8.0; sky 1/13 sec., water 1/4 second.

I appreciate it Carol! It was a real treat to be there in the moment, and was totally worth the frozen fingers!

Really nice image Dean. Love the water and light....and the fog in front of Shackle ridge
Good job of avoiding the guardrail on the left side...also good timing with water flows as any higher water levels would have resulted in needing a wider view.
One thing I do find is that the island trees appear somewhat flat in contrast.

Was this taken some time ago?....the pines on both sides are now red from the beetle infestation..

Hi John! Thank you for the kind comments and CC, it is much appreciated.
Yes, this was taken in 2018 and I had processed a horizontal version but this one sat on my drive until now... not sure why!

Hope you are well. It's been a while since I've been able to venture out to the Rockies and I can't wait for COVID to be over!

A really enchanting image.
I love the silky effect of the water, the symmetry of the composition and those really amazing lights above the trees.
