On the trail up Goodnow Mountain in the Adirondacks, this yellow birch tree proves it has what it takes to survive.

Isn't nature wonderful!  Its great when you hear one half of a couple say their partner is 'their rock' - I guess this tree has also found its rock. :)

Well spotted and a beautiful image, Warren!

Well seen, this is very cool. The roots look like a hand encircling the boulder. Very unusual that it grew this way, did water take out the soil from the roots perhaps. Thanks for sharing.

Brought a smile!   Fabulous image Warren and a joy to view large.  It does also show how partnerships often have a rock to lean on as you and Carol suggest.

What a cool find. I think a lower shooting angle and possibly a vertical composition to really emphasize the roots leading from the ground to the rock to the tree would make a cool alternate composition.

Wonderful shot- love seeing how this tree has survived. Looks a bit like an octopus! ;). There was a small birch in our woods that must have lost it's rock but still stood up like this. Evenatully it fell, but i was always amazed to see it. This one is huge!

Hi E.J.,

I actually shot it both ways. As usual you are correct, the vertical was better because of the root system but the horizontal, in my mind, is better because it gives a better sense of place within the landscape.  Because I like having the other fairly large yellow birch back on the left, along the trail, I chose to show this one.  Thanks for the comment as you are spot on with your thought.

This is cool. Looks like T Rex grabbing a ball to play with. In my opinion it is a photo that you could do many things to play with artistically. But it is a very neat fine as is. Very original
