It never ceases to amaze how nature can create such dynamic and unique textures like this curvy flow of molten lava. It remains absolutely mesmerizing in so many ways and is by far the most exciting subject I've ever had the chance to witness.

Tech: Nikon D850, Nikkor 70-200 2.8 @135mm, f3.5, 1/1600 second at ISO 6400. Hanging out the side of a doors-off chopper hovering 25 feet off of the ground.

The comp and the swirls add a lot of implied movement. Colors are great. I saw the image of you hanging out of the helicopter on your website under “Meet Dean”. Pretty dedicated photographer, I would say. I bet the heat is intense.

Thanks, Joe. What a thrill that flight was. I went up in March 2018 and the historic eruption began 8 weeks later. I was lucky to come home with a few keepers, as currently there is no flow on the Big Island.

And yes, even with the rotor wash, you could definitely feel the heat!

Thank you David! That chopper flight wasn't cheap so I'm glad that I came away with something, lol!

Beautiful, the colour of the molten lava contrasts beautifully against those cool blueish tones.
