I took the family camping in the UP this week and this was the scene accross the road from our campsite.

I experimented with a couple different angles, less shore line. more shore line, in the water, up on the cliff and thought I liked this one the best. I am still very new to scenic type shots so any input/critiques are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Really peaceful and eye-relaxing shot, Bob. Love the shimmering reflection of the setting sun and the overall mood conveyed by the shot is one of total bliss. Nice job...and welcome! :-)
Shoot in RAW because memory is cheap, but memories are priceless.

Beautiful light and lovely color in the sky.

I'm not sure about the shoreline here; it's not all that well defined compositionally to my eye. The inclining point of land seems kind of harshly truncated and the actual shoreline itself is fairly straight, which makes it appear rather static.

I think I actually like this image better with the shore cropped off, leaving a very simple but pleasing picture.

To include part of the shoreline, based on what I see here, I might have been inclined to move forward a few hundred feet and see if using that arching area towards the horizon might constitute a more dynamic element as a leading line.

Lots of good elements here and, of course, the above is simply my opinion. Feel free to disregard most or all of it. :)

I can see why you experimented with a lot of different angles and crops. You have a lot of different photos in this shot. I tried cropping out the top or the bottom to make a pano and those were nice too.

I like having the shore in the photo so I wouldn't crop that out.

I would darken the top of the photo a bit to make the sky more even. And if it were me, I think I would have zoomed wider to have the sun not so close to the edge of the frame.

Nice setting here Bob. It is good to see that you do occasionally shoot on the topside.

Very peaceful!
I like the shore, but would have preferred it a bit brighter.

Very serene and tranquil. Sets a nice mood. Definitely a lot of different possible compositions here. I think I would have put a bit more shoreline in. As it stands, there's not quite enough to suggest where it is with just a hint of pines. I would also either lighten the shore a bit, suggested previously, again to give a sense of place, or darken it appreciably so it's more a silouette and my eye isn't looking for detail in the shadows.

Actually, I really like this. Since the image is so simple, you have to pay careful attention and remove any distracting elements. The little bit of land separate from the shore is one of those elements. Moving forward, along the shore might work.

The shore's exposure might be lightened a bit. I wouldn't go too far since you don't want it to compete with the killer colors in the water.

Overall,really nice job.

Cheers
