Chiricahua Mountains - Arizona
a7R II, 16-35mm @16mm, ISO 6400, f/2.8, 30s
Yesterday, I made a 3.5 hour each way midnight run to Chiricahua National Monument in the southeastern-most part of my state, Arizona, in search of dark skies presiding over an interesting landscape.  I got there about 3:30AM which gave me about 75 minutes before it got too light to get good shots of the Milky Way. This image was taken shortly after the waning crescent moon rose illuminating the top of the rock formation.  The exposure is 12 exposures combined with Starry Landscape Stacker using a polar tracker aligned to Polaris, the north star, to insure that the stars do not create star trails.  12 exposures were taken to median average out any sensor noise.  The glow on the horizon in the lower right is from the city of Douglas, AZ and Agua Prieta, Mexico.  The light on the left side of the foreground feature is due to taking the photo just after the waning crescent of the moon rose.  The distant mountains on the horizon are in Mexico.

Viewing this amazing image leaves me absolutely awestruck and I'm not ashamed to say, quite moved by its beauty.    To say that I love it, just doesn't seem enough.  8)

I admire the time and preparation you put into this image as much as I do the image quality. Outstanding image, EJ.

Just wow, love the light on the foreground outcrop that augments the aesthetics of the milky way image! Inspiring image.
