I had the opportunity to spend about a week up in Denali NP at the end of August. This was taken on the backside of Cathedral Mountain, which is on the south side of the road as you leave the Teklanika valley going into Sable Pass.

Since I was hauling around my new 500mm lens looking for critters, I decided to do a few scenic "extracts." My 10x binoculars proved invaluable in spotting interesting scenes to investigate with the lens. Occassioanlly I added a 1.4 TC also.

Comments greatly appreciated.

Interesting abstract. I think it the right had area in the background was lightened a bit it would help make this image stronger.

I really love the colors in this image (earthy and subdued). The composition is nice with the large slope in the foreground and the diagonal angling down to the right. And the textures are nice also. Is there detail in those shadow areas? Even if there's not, I really like this one.

Tim, you really have some interesting curves, lines and textures here. A B&W version might also be really cool. Do you know the source of the two gouges on the right (just left of the first shadow)? A rock slide?

Do you remember how high you were here? It looks like hauling a lot of heavy camera gear at this altitude would be serious workout.

Hey man,

I didn't know you got a 500mm! Sweet.

Cathedral Mountain is an awesome place .. what a great area to hike around. I hope you stayed out of the closed area at Sable Pass. :D

This shot is very cool. Well seen. I'm keen to see more of your stuff from Denali.

Cheers

Carl

Thanks for the comments.

There are a few details in the shadows on the film, I just don't think there's enough for my scanner to pull out. Even with an 8x loupe the details are subtle.

The gouges just to the left of the first shadow are most like from water erosion. I'd guess that snow built up on the area just above them and all of that water drained into those two chutes.

There's also some sheep trails near that second shadow, but there more subtle than I had hoped.

The elevation on this hike was varied from maybe 2800' up to about 4300' and that was over a distance of about 6 mile. Most of the climing I did was at the end, chasing a couple of nice rams, which were not too cooperative.

I was thinking that this looked a lot higher. Is the treeline in Alaska lower than in places like Wyoming and Colorado because of the colder climate?

Nice lines, curves and textures. I also like the shadows in the crevices.

Tim,

It is so abstract that I can't get a sense of scale here. Neat.
