I've been wanting to scout this area for night shots for about a year now and conditions finally lined up to make it happen. This spot is high up in the mountains dividing Idaho and Montana above tree line. There are lots of old, dead trees to make an interesting foreground with. This one caught my eye with the swirling pattern.

I tried some new techniques shooting this. Higher ISO and shorter exposures to minimize or eliminate star trailing.

Nikon D750
Nikon 14-24 2.8
ISO 10000
f/2.8
10 sec.

ISO 2000

Striking composition.
A great photograph is absorbed by the eyes and stored in the heart.

Thanks so much for all of the kind comments! I had so much fun shooting that night. The sky was amazingly clear.

Love the wonderful dead tree in contrast to the spectacular sky. A really interesting and original view.

Very cool composition and shot. My only suggestion would be to tone down the blue in the distant mountain as it gives the composite nature of the photo away.
