ZWO ASI 1600MM-C, TS Optics 8" Newtonian, ASA 0.73x Reducer, ZWO LRGB Filters, 30 second exposures

Red Filter (80 exposures, 40min total)
Green Filter (80 exposures, 40min total)
Blue Filter (80 exposures, 40min total)
Lum Filter (450 exposures, 225 minutes total)

Total integration:  5.75 hours

I recently upgraded to a mono camera for astrophotography.   This allows me to capture each color channel separately along with a luminance filter to gather photons quickly for resolution.  It has complicated the capture and editing process, but I have much more control over the results.

This image of the Elephant's Trunk Nebula (IC 1396) is one of the first deep space targets I have imaged since I purchased this camera.  Located in the constellation Cepheus, IC 1396 is located about 2400 light years away and is believed to be a region of active star formation.

Well deserved EP Chris! I think you may have found your niche! Just understanding all that special equipment required is a major "Attaboy" from me! :)

Thanks Mark!  It's tough for me to get out into the "field" with Lindsay's health, and setting up in the fenced in back yard in our neighborhood I never saw any moose... so I banged my head against the wall and Astrophotography fell out.

This kind of imaging is complicated, but not as much as you might think.

I'd love to shoot the Milky Way from SSP or Abol Bridge someday.  Your skies up there are so dark it's amazing.  I remember camping out with Lee and Jim and Jim up at Nesowadnehunk and the stars were amazing!  (Back before I imaged them of course, but has me wanting a special trip for it sometime!).

Stunning and totally fascinating as usual Chris.  I had to go and see the high res version and its just incredible!  I want to know what the thing that looks like a man with a bald head emerging from a black hole about halfway down towards the left side of centre is.  Have you any idea?  8)

The magenta in these deep space images is Hydrogen that has been excited by nearby energetic stars. The black areas are dark nebula which is pretty much just dust. It blocks out everything behind it which gives it contrast along the edges and has the appearance of being a deep dark void. It is believed that the dark bulbous area is an active star forming region, with stars that are only a hundred thousand years old. (Most stars live to be a couple billion years old)

I'm pretty sure that all of the above is BS. I can't prove it... but I think its all just magic. Glad you like it!

Thanks Chris, BS or not I'll settle for your 'magic' theory.  8)
