Emma Gorge - Western Australia
Phase One XF-100mp, 80mm, ISO 50, f/11, 1.6s

While hiking the trail from the end of Emma Gorge back to the lodge at the base of the gorge I spotted this smallish 4 foot high waterfall off of the trail.  It took a little maneuvering through rocks in the river to get to it which I did successfully despite some pretty slippery rocks and carrying 30lb of medium format gear using my tripod as a stabilizing stick.  Once I got the tripod in position in the water and selected the Schneider Kreuznach 80mm f/2.8 Leaf Shutter lens for the shot (approximately 50mm f/1.8 in normal full frame terms), I noticed a small branch that was distracting in the shot.  So I managed to climb up to the waterfall to temporarily bend it out of the way.  I grabbed the branch and nearly grabbed a spider web with a big bright yellow spider, nearly the size of my hand.  I just about had a heart attack and nearly fell into the river.  One of the things one is warned about when visiting the Australian outback is that there are more deadly snakes and spiders in Australia then in the rest of the world combined which resulted in my involuntary and very quick reaction. Ultimately I was able to move the branch a bit and get it out of the shot but my heart didn't stop racing for a while.

For the shot, I took three shots, one focused on the foreground rocks, one on the waterfall and one on the background and I then focus stacked them in Helicon Focus.

Later I found out that these spiders are not poisonous...

Probably a golden orb spider, scared me witless when swimming in the pools up there hanging over the water.

Nice shot E.J. easily worth the effort.

Lovely image. Sounds like a golden orb spider - would hurt, but wouldn't kill you :). Used to have lots of them in the garden that you'd need to navigate to get to the front door when I lived in Sydney. You don't need to be in the outback - the area around where I live here ~20kms from Melbourne's CBD, people routinely see Tiger snakes (I think they're 5th or 6th deadliest snake in the world). You get used to it ;).

Very nice and appreciate the technical details. Did you consider just cloning the twig in post rather than actually removing it?
