Study in Green

These seaweed-covered rocks at Honeymoon Island State Park caught my eye the other day but it was sunny (and way too contrasty). Sunday morning brought the desired diffusion filter, i.e., clouds.

Canon EOS 1Ds, 28-135mm IS lens handheld (109mm). ISO 250, Evaluative metering -1/3 stop: 1/25 sec. at f/22.

All comments welcome. Best and great picture-making to all, Artie

Hand held at 100mm and 1/25 sec - you are a brave man and your hand holding technique is outstanding to get a shot this sharp. Very nicely done!!!

Hi EJ, Glad that you liked. Actually, 1/25 is a fast shutter speed for the 28-135 IS. Even though you do not feel IS kick in with the short lens, it really works at slow shutter speeds. I have made some sharp images as slow as 1/6 sec., and others report sharp images at 1/2 sec... (I know that that is hard to believe but what do we know until we try it.)

Best, and see you soon at Bosque, Artie

This is so neat! How big of an area do the rocks cover? I'd like to see this but until I do thanks for sharing!

On my copy of this lens, I DO feel it kick in, and definitely feel it kick "out" too. I can hear it operating, and when it turns itself off, there is often a small "thunk" and the image noticeably shifts. Is this a problem?

Hi Paul, I've used several 28-135mm IS lenses and never felt anything like the thunk I feel with the big telephotos, heck, I am always doubting that IS is even on (but the results show that it is). IAC, if your images made at slow shutter speeds are sharp, I would not be too concerned. (I just realized that as I've gotten older my hearing is not what it used to be so it might just be that the short zoom IS is quieter than the big guns, but on the other hand, I never feel the image shift either...
Best, Artie

Terrific texture and color! Wow. I especially like the area at the bottom withOUT the green, just to keep it interesting.

Looking at this from various angles leaves me with an impression of a verdant fairyland in which the rocks become hills and the seaweed becomes arable land. As with many of your images, I like this quite a bit because it strikes my imagination.

Funny to see Jenny's comment. I like it as it stands but was thinking just the opposite: it was even stronger without the rocks - gives the impression that it just goes on and on!

Cool shot! I'm almost crazy enough to go for the 28-135IS over the 28-70/2,8 after seeing and hearing this...
