White Spruce on Fall Tundra from moving bus in Denali National Park, AK
Image copyright 2003 Arthur Morris/BIRDS AS ART
Canon 300mm f/4L IS lens and EOS 1D body, ISO 1600, Evaluative metering at 0: 1/125 sec. at f/5.6.

As I experimented with various shutter speeds, I found that for vegetation close to the road (as here) that I needed a faster shutter speed to prevent the image from becoming simply blobs of color (although some of them worked too...) In addition, I began angling the camera figuring that the diagonal streaks might be a bit more interesting than the horizontal streaks. I also started working in AV to have total control over shutter speed. As I recall, this one was made on our way out of Denali on a dark day with a developing snowstorm (note the ISO and the aperture!) All comments welcome.
Best and great picture making to all, Artie

Let's hear it for digital where you can see all your blur experiments immediately and make changes and corrections based on the previous image.

You are right, Dan, no matter how bored I was on that bus I would never have tried even a single frame if I were shooting film, much less several hundred... Best, Artie

Artie, I was thinking of some of your pictures today. I'm privileged to work a couple blocks from the Art Institute of Chicago. At lunch today I was enjoying some Manet portraits that had beautiful simple backgrounds like many of your bird portraits. Now I gotta go look at the Monets!

I like this, I think it's way more then just a funny story behind a curious image. I'm glad to see that such a renowned photographer as you are don't get accommodated and keep experimenting and having fun.

Nice. I like the blur image in your newletter #114 even better, just a preference for the colors. Was your focus set manually, approximately at the distance of most of the vegetation?

Hi Dave, I like that one better too. I used autofocus. Most of the stuff was right along side of the road, but in this one, I think that it was a ways off. Best, Artie
