Probably between 15-20 seconds.... Cropped some black off the bottom. Taken from about 20 minutes west of my home away from the city lights. The actual substorm or highened activity took place from about 11:45PM to 12:00AM CDT.

HERE are the rest of the images...

WOW! This is super! You not only have the aurora, but a nice composition as well with interesting reflections and curving shoreline. The upper corners look darker. Is that from vignetting or less light from the aurora in that part of the sky?

I think it is from lack of aurora and also shooting wide open at f/1.8. So, yea and yea. :)

This is really cool. Is there a way to predict auroras, or do you just "get lucky?"

Great shot from an amazing phenomenon. I only saw an Aurora once, in Vermont and it wasn't very colorful but I will never forget it.

I like this one but it's not my favorite in the series. I prefer this one

Great image! We've had some spectacular Auroras up here too. Looks like you're close to 20 second here judging from the stars which show some movement. They're 99,9 % Green on my parts, and have never seen them with this much yellow. Maby because we're positioned right below the most active Aurora area in the world they are only green - haven't figured that out yet! Good choice of foreground. Keep up the good work!

Svein,

I would love to be at your location! Aurora almost all the time. It is almost intoxicating watching them!

Man, this is cool! You got some great colors here, Ken, and a great composition too. Someday I'd like to see this in person.

Excellent! The position of the big dipper certainly confirms that you were looking north. This easily recognizable star pattern adds to the image.

Information on this and other types of space related information can be located at Space Weather. Since auroras are generated by solar activity, the site puts out regular alerts to be on the look out for auroras. You can even have them email an alert to a cell phone or pager. :)

Hi Ken, Stunning, with a great choice of foreground! What was the ISO? And the aperture? Did you need to lighten the water at all in PS?
Best, and keep up the great work. Artie
