West Mitten - Navajo Nation, USA
EOS 1D, 28-70 @ 70mm, 4 sec, f/2.8, ISO 200

In my quest to record some of our country's great landmarks but to make them look a bit different than the popular photos, I took this shot an hour before sunrise on a day that would eventually dump several inches of snow. The small amount of light on the right side was the only hint of sunlight for two days.

Not that I would recognize many of the landmarks, but this is really unique. The blues in this are gorgeous, and of course I like the silhouette. What state is this in? (Please forgive my ignorance.) :)

Actually that is a tougher question to answer than you realize - it sits right on the Utah/Arizona border the majority of the Mitten is in AZ with the little ledge on the left being in UT - at least thats as accurate as I can make it from the map that I have. The Navajo Nation comprises the northeastern part of AZ and a small part of UT and NM - it is governed under its own laws, has its own time zone, etc.

WOW!

EJ, this is superb! The blue is great, the silhouette is very nice, but the reddish area in the corner is Fantastic! Wonderful!

I completely love the silhouette against the deep blue sky. I think you've succeeded in making this look different from what we normally see. I also really like the small blue frame as it defines the edges from the frame. Also- Thanks for the geography lesson. I was confused by the different time zone while driving through Navajo Nation this summer!

The sky has a certain luminous quality that I associate with cold, wintery weather. The rest of the day is usually a write off (dark and grey). The small sliver of pink provides a nice contrast to the mitten.

Nice image.

Amazingly this looks even better on my laptop screen than it does on my monitor. I guess I have the blues set kind of hot on the laptop screen.

I guess my comment would be about the framing. The blue piping helps the eye stay in the frame at the bottom.

Very striking and beautiful. I love that hint of pink on the lower right.

Did you ever contact Scott at Metroform?

I love a good silhouette, and this is no exception. The pink glow is a nice touch.

E.J., the silhouette against the deep blue sky is great, and the tiny bit of pink is really nice. Might I have seen some post-snow posts?

Another nice one of the monuments. Have loved this landscape since I saw "Stagecoach" by John Ford... The dark blue is a real stunner!

great contrast in the colors. And, of course, the hint of pink in the corner always looks good.
