This past weekend in the Plumas Natl. Forest, CA, in the Lakes Basin. This is an un-named lake so I named it Bear Lake since the day before after photographing here at this small lake I saw a Brown Bear emerge from the trees on the opposite shore. I tried to photograph it also, but I needed to switch from a 24mm lense to a 400mm lens and before I could even get my pack off my back the bear scampered off into the trees never to be seen again.

I am not sure how well this image works. I like the foreground water plants how they emerge from the darkness and how the sunlight illuminates the submerged rocks, but from there on up it just seems somewhat ordinary. What do you think?

Nikon F4s, Nikon 24mm MF f/2 at f11 1/60sec 2 ND SS and 81B, on Fuji Velvia 100F. PS6, Levels, Color Balance and a Masked Curves layer to dodge the sky in a bit since it was too hot.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Youssef,

IMHO the clear water in the FG saves this from being ordinary. Without that, the scene is fairly mundane but your composition is very creative.

I think the foreground and the sudden loss of the reflection makes this picture unique

This is a nice image. I like the cloud formations, the rich green of the far shore, the blues, and your foreground indeed makes the image. I agree with Lillian, nice elements arranged as well as they could be, but overall, maybe this location at that point in time just wasn't going to help you create an image that "sings".

The foreground really makes this photo. The only nit I have is I wish the expanse of reflective blue water between front and the distant shore was a bit less.

Youssef,

This is a nice shot. But I agree that the upper part isn't great. Not bad at all, but not WOW either.

The forground is very nice OTOH. I like the details you managed to capture on the bottom and the transition to the reflection off the surface.

A radical idea might be to crop it just under the distant shore. Would make a very nice albeit also very different image...

Youssef, this is a beautiful shot...the choice of composition here is masterful and the foreground lighting was perfect.
Shoot in RAW because memory is cheap, but memories are priceless.
