This was taken on the grounds of the legislature here in Edmonton. The background trees are being lit from below by floodlights whereas the foreground tree is in shadow. Converted to b&w. Makes for kind of a neat effect I think.

Thanks,
Eric

This is very strong. The black tree in shadow is great. Wonderful textures.

Yes it is a neat effect! The floodlit trees have a "negative" look to them. You did well to see the possibilities, and visualize the end result.

A little bit more for the eyes to behold in this image than your usual clean, and elegant simplicity Eric. :) But you definitely have found an interesting and unique subject here and created a very neat effect. The background trees look like x-rays to me. Cool stuff.

that is gorgeous.

it feels like a pen and ink drawing to me when I view it.
very artistic feel to it.

superb concept and the composition looks flawless. By far one of the best images I have seen posted on here or anywhere else for that matter.

you really created and saw something that very few would be lucky enough to see much less capture.

Eric, strong composition (as ususal) Looks like a good ol' solarization effect with B&W. Very good.

This is really neat! IMHO it successfully breaks most of the rules for "classic" B&W images, and indeed looks more like some exotic process. Very striking!

Eric, this is terrific! I am really blown away by the creativity and vision you had here. I would bet that if I walked past this scene I wouldn't have been able to visualize this and would have just kept on walking. When you came upon this, were you able to visualize the final product, or did that come about after working with it on the computer?

Simple and powerful, Eric...I love everything about this shot!
Shoot in RAW because memory is cheap, but memories are priceless.

Well, a bit of both really. I certainly anticipated the idea of dark trunks in front of the brighter back lit branches. I also converted it to B&W almost immediately. The 'in process discovery' really occured when I pushed the levels adjustment to really take the foreground tree in to the black and the background trees in to the white (ie. there are areas of pure white and pure black).

Personally, I take the whole pre-visualization thing with a grain of salt and believe that it is entirely legitimate and sometimes quite exciting to make discoveries later on in the artistic process (most of which involves a computer for me).

Jerry Uelsmann has an interesting article on what he calls 'post visualization' on his site: http://www.uelsmann.net/.

cheers,
Eric
