I'm recently back from 25 days in South America, the "excuse" was to visit my daughter currently doing volunteer work in Chile. We didn't have a single reasonable sunrise and only two passable sunsets, but this one was off-the-map - and I didn't have anything other than an assortment of scrub for foreground. Couldn't even single out a dead shrub. (Large sections of the Atacama have been mined so it's not exactly photogenic.) Any thoughts or suggestions in terms of how to handle this?

Only modification was to crop it to 5x4; that really was the color of the sky.

The sky looks great. Sometimes when there's nothing else to keep the eye from wondering around is simply set your self-timer up and put yourself into the image. As it is, the brush looks a little bit like an accident it got into there. Definitely a challenge when you don't have anything to work with.

I think I read a story about Art Wolf running around after a thunderstorm looking for something to shoot because the light was so incredible. He simply stopped a couple guys walking along the road and shot their image. The picture looked great and you can really tell how awesome the light quality was.

Cheers

Amazing colors. The sky looks like rolling red waves. I would love to see that brilliant sky with a really dynamic silhouette. It sounds like Tom gave you some good suggestions. I have never even see a sky this color!

Rich, you don't know what you shot right???

What you have shot here is a Sun pillar. It's a halo phenomana.

Love the shot!

Amazing colour. Although you don't have an image on film that you wanted, I'm sure the image in your mind will be long in the memory :D.

Tom, thanks for the suggestions. I hadn't heard of Art Wolfe running around after a thunderstorm, but I know I certainly was running around looking for anything. There were 11 of us in a VW minibus - don't ask why, think "religious Woodstock" and lots of amazing photos that don't fit here - but I never thought of a composition with people!

Peter, I didn't have a clue until you mentioned it, but it's obvious now. Thanks!

And Tom, I tried a number of abstracts and may post one later.

The color is awesome. Crop the foreground shrubs and you have one heck of an abstract with just the sky.
