I went down to the pier near my house for a walk and saw this bird on a sign. Grabbed the 1D and the 300 IS. Took a reading off of the grass (less 1/3 stop for digital) and set it manually: 1/1600 at f/5.6 (ISO 250). I walked up to the bird took two frames as it flew by me. All comments welcome. Best and great picture-making to all, Artie

Hey Artie,
You knew I'd like this one! Really tough to get the autofocus to lock on these guys when they are against a bacdground like this too. Great job.

Artie,

Congrats on a beauty! Refreshing to see this bird flying against something other than sky.

Did you in fact use AF in this case? I'm a complete dunce when it comes to getting AF to track anything flying against anything other than sky.

Artie,

Both the top and bottom wing surfaces seem to be very uniformly lit. I'm curious to know what time of day it was and how low the sun was. Also, with reagrds to Jim's comments, do you think this shot have been much more difficult with he 10D?

This really shows that red shoulder on the far wing better than I've seen anywhere else

Artie,

This is a very nice shot. The thing that I like the best is the eye level perspective.

I like the eye level perspective and the green background and of course the bird! The image could be lightened a little with levels but it isn't overly dark. Did you prepare this on an LCD or laptop? Images tend to look a lot brighter on those types of monitors than they are.

Very sweet. I agree it is a tad dark, but not much. The bird flying toward you makes it that much better.

Hi Gang, Glad that you all liked. I used central sensor AF. I prefocused on the ground in front of the perch so that the lens would not have to search too much. Making this one with the 10D would have been much more difficult.... As I remember, it was cloudy bright thus the even lighting. I am in NYC where it has rained the whole week and am headed to Denali on Friday. If it is not pouring, I hope to get one last tide at the East Pond tomorrow afternoon. I think that I did this one on the laptop, which has been calibrated, but in the beginning folks were commenting "too dark" al lot so I make them a bit lighter than I would normally. And all of our monitors vary both individually and over time...
Best and love and great picture-making to all, Artie

Wow, this is a good one for sure. Love the low level in flight and the surrounding greenery. Beautiful!

The hawk just pops off the screen. The whole bird is lit very well. Way to be ready for the action.

Nice shot! I like the BG as well. The wing position is perfect for this composition.

Art, I'd like to see this image at 650 pixels. It's a great shot that deserves a little more area on the screen.

Great shot Artie! I've tried for shots like this with my 10D and I know how tough it can be. This reminds me of the RSH we saw at Blue Cypress. I tried for a shot like this then and blew it.

Terrific shot, Arthur. I always seem to have difficulty in getting AF to lock onto a bird against this kind of BG.
