Photo taken at the La Jolla tide pools last week. I've been amazed at the variety of shorebirds I've seen at this one location. One session has given me enough posts for three weeks :D

Neil,

This is excellent! Love the rocks the bird is standing on, the background, and the pose showing off the legs. Very nice! :D

That is one of the best spots on the west coast for shore birds - especially since they tend to be more approachable in this location that just about anywhere else in the west. This is a very nice photo taken in my favorite Black Turnstone photo area :)

Love the low angle view which really helps showing off the bright yellow legs ...
Excellent shot, Neil!

A beautiful shot, Neil. Exposure and composition are right on the money. Is the bird standing on mollusks or rock or both?

Sandy,

In many areas there are clusters of small mollusks that seem to be "cemented" to the sandstone. This is one of those areas. The shorebirds seem to love poking around in them.

Neil,

Everything works in this one: position of the bird, low sun off to the side resulting in dimensional look, the beautiful setting & perch; way to go!

Excellent shot in every aspect!

The sidelighting works very well here to throw some extra detail on the mollusks. Normally I would prefer to see sidelit birds with light coming onto the front, but that with the head position here, this works equally well also.

I also like that you can at least see most of one foot. Those Surfbirds always seemed to have their feet crammed into some little nook or cranny.

Richard,

Once you get to La Jolla, Coast Blvd runs right along the coast from the cliffs, south for about a mile or so. The tide pools are located about a hundred yards south of the Children's Pool Beach towards the south end of Coast Blvd. Coming from the North, getting from I-5 to La Jolla can also be a bit of a trick. Make sure you take the La Jolla Village drive exit.

Neil,

Beautiful shot. The mollusks make a great perch and the light looks very nice.

Absolutely gorgeous Neil. I've been looking for Surfbirds for a month and have only seen a couple within shooting distance. This one hurts a lot. Thanks for pouring fuel on the fire! :)

This is sweet indeed. I like how the lichens and algae growing on the rocks compliment the legs and bill of the bird. The rocks are superb, and the bird is as well. Wonderful shot.
