I got this little guy a few days ago at the beach here on Padre Island in Corpus Christi, TX. He was chasing off an intruder (from what I could not figure out). They sure are fun to shoot, but even with fast shutter speeds I get a lot of blurred shots.

1D with 600 and 1.4X TC, EV - 1 (ISO 200, 1/2,000, f8), on groundpod. Cropped to about 70% of original size.

On the last few images I have posted, the posted image seems to lack some contrast compared to the JPG before posting. Juli Wilcox suggested I boost the contrast just a tad. I did as Juli suggested.

Thanks for looking. All comments appreciated.

Nice shot of the little "ruffled guy". They are fun to watch but hard to shoot. About the only time I have them completely sharp is when their head is in the water. You did a great job of getting this one sharp.

As to the contrast.....I've noticed the same thing. I've also gone to boosting the contrast and/or saturation. I thought it was just me.

Bruce, great shot of this Sanderling. This is so indicative of their natural behavior.
Well done.

Bruce,

Nice capture. I throw away about half of my images of these because they flit about so much and rarely lift their head up.

Bruce,

This shot is fabulous. Even at incredibly high shutter speeds in Florida I was not able to get any acceptable images of these guys without much clutter in the image. This shot is awesome. No nits whatsoever.

Well done! Very sharp, well composed and you caught him at a fascinating moment. The saturation looks fine to me, it's not clear whether the posted image was enhanced or not.

Great shot! I like everything about this!

I'm surprised to see that Texas bird already so far along into basic plumage. There are still quite a few adult Sanderlings hanging around in Ohio and they're still showing signs of being primarily in alternate plumage, scruffy looking, but still mostly in alternate.

1/2000 sec? Whew! I don't think I've used a shutter speed with my film cameras beyond 1/500 sec. in years, and only very rarely above 1/250.

Love the ruffled look, the stepping motion, and the blues/grays in the image. Very sharp shot, not easy to do with these little birds that can move so quickly.

Superb. They are defending the feeding territories that they set up while on migration. Best, Artie

I love it, Bruce. The blue BG complements the grayish feathers, and the action is outstanding. Great stuff.

Great action shot and the contrast looks just right to me. It's almost impossible to catch these guys when they're on the move.
