There were so many of these Longtails, all in bunches of 20-50. It was hard trying to isolate a pair. They were really cute with their quite calls. Took this image under the lift bridge in Hamilton, Ontario, a couple of weekends past. Hope you like it!

Beautiful color, nicely postioned birds, and the female amazingly sharp for as far as she is behind the male. On a tripod, I'd go to 1/500 or even 1/250 (depending on their speed) trying to make her as sharp as he is.

Nice image with the two Ducks positioned well and visible catchlight. If possible I would have tried for a slightly lower angle.

Note that a lower angle would have worked against the DOF you have here--shooting from water level, the female would probably be badly OOF at f8. By shooting at a downward angle, the film/sensor plane is much closer to the plane that contains both birds. From directly above, both would be exactly the same distance from the camera (though it might not make the best shot!).

I could not get any lower than I was. I could have jumped into the channel from the pier, if it was warmer. -15 on that day.

I'm surprised that most of you, so far, find f8 would give a shallow DOF. As I only have the 100-400 for a long lens, which is a tad soft wide open I mostly shoot at f8. This image was definately f8, see the shortened Exif data below.

Lat,

DOF is relative. She looks like she's a foot or more behind him--a huge distance in terms of DOF with a telephoto. People sometimes shoot at f16 or f22 trying to get the eyes of two birds sharp where one is only one or two inches behind the other. The bigger they are in the frame, the more need to stop down, so many shooting 500 or 600mm lenses with TCs may be more accustomed to stopping way down. If your Longtail image is significantly cropped, that might explain the great DOF at f8, as the smaller the magnifcation, the more DOF at a given aperture.

Lat, this is excellent! I've never seen these birds up close; only small dots in the distance that are just clear enough for an ID. Cliff is 100% correct on the techs btw.

cheers, Oliver

I'm in awe of this one. I've only seen a female....at a fair distance...and she was a rarity for us. This is beautiful to have them both in great water and with such sharpness. I think this is your best post yet. I really love these ducks. The DOF worked well for you here.
