This Owl was shot at my bird feeder in my backyard looking for snack. This was shot with my Canon 10D with a 300/4 IS with a 2X teleconverter.
It was adjusted and sharpen in Adobe CS.

John, it took me a sec to see which branch he was sitting on. Nice shot with nice placement in the frame. I like the snow on the branches. It looks to me that there is a slight cyan cast to this, also a catchligh would add to this image.

John, nice visitor! If stays around, you might consider getting some brown mice at the pet store for him. I know a guy in Barre, VT, that did that last year, and he had two barred owls taking mice out of his gloved hand - in flight! You often need a little flash with these guys to get a catch-light in the eye, but be careful - you have to get the flash well off the lens axis or the photo will have a bad case of red-eye.

John:

I really wish the bird was in better focus. I don't mind the body as is but ideally, the nose and eye should be sharper. What part of the bird did you focus on? I don't think additional USM would help in this case. A very nice documentation shot in any event.

I agree with Alan Murphy's critique. The owl looks cold.

Pretty cold looking birds!!!

Nice pose and complimentary BG, a kiss of flash would have been wonderful here, adding a little warmth to the colors, the bird is rather soft focused and that really steals the thunder from this shot, the snow on the branches is a plus , guessing which branch is the perch is wonderful!!
Congrats!! 8)

Thanks for your comments. They are wonderful. A little fill flash would have been great except this shot was shot thru a glass window. That may have some cause for soft focaus?

Ditto on all points. If it was shot through a window, I can understand how hard it would be to manual focus the 600mm with 2X on it. Not bad, though.
