Title: GREATER SAGE-GROUSE - SPRINGTIME ON THE LEK
Photographer: James McIntyre
Date: April, 2002
Location: Morgan County, UT
Equipment: Canon EOS-1VHS/EF 600 mm F/4L IS USM + 2.0x I TE/Gitzo 1548 + Wimberley Head/Fuji Provia 100F
Evaluative Metering: +2/3

Every spring, as the snow begins to leave the high desert country of northern Utah, one of Nature's most remarkable exhibitions may be observed. Each day before dawn, dozens of Greater Sage-Grouse assemble on their ancestral lek to begin their traditional courtship and mating ritual. Grouse cocks raise their spiked tail feathers in a crownlike fan, throw their heads back and inflate the large air sacs on their white-ruffed breasts. Suddenly they clasp their wings forward in a rapid motion and emit a loud two-note descending call, "BOOL - DUP!", that can be heard a quarter-mile away. This display is repeated again and again.

Only a few dominant males are successful in attracting females. Once having mated, the diminutive hens retreat silently into the sage brush to raise their broods of chicks as single moms. A few hopeful bachelors linger briefly after sunrise, facing off and staging mock fights. Then they too vanish into the brush to avoid the talons of hungry Golden Eagles.

An hour after dawn, there is no trace of the remarkable event just witnessed.

Hi, Jim! Long time no chat! Hope all is well with you!

Lovely image, and though some might take issue with the white BG I think it enhances the image a lot. I wish the brown spot in the UL weren't there, but the bird's stance and your excellent sharpness and exposure are strong enough to carry the image despite that distraction. Nice work!

James,

A dramatic posture and the peak of performance and your choice of a low perspective makes this a very interesting image. The exposure looks very good under what had to be trickly lighting. I could see a slight under-exposure just to saturate the colors and bring out a bit more detail in the white feathers and snow. As an illustration of this behavior, I think this is a very successful image, and though I too would have preferred the brown area at the upper left not be there, I agree with Lillian that it doesn't detract from the overall strength of this image. On my screen the head does not look as sharp as the rest of the bird. Is it possible focus was placed somewhere else? A wonder experience brought to us through your image. Thanks for sharing this and your words to go with it.

Paul

A very cool bird and the plyumage is awesome. Composition is good too. I would wish for slightly less exposure as some of the highlights on the neck appear overexposed and for the background in the upper left corner to also be snow.

A nice shot, James, under difficult circumstances. Thanks for the great tale about their mating rituals. I agree with about 1/3 less EV.

Jim,
What a beautiful creature! Like others who have already commented, I think an exposure adjustment (e.g. - 1/3) would really help.

Really great shot of a magnificent bird! How do the whites look on your slide? I used to lose some detail during the scanning process.

A wonderful image. Like Lillian I enjoy the snowy environment and feel it adds to the photo.

Other than the whites being too hot I have no nits with this. I too would love to get the op to shot some of these. Must be really something to be so close and to witness the ritual.

The nit on the whites has been mentioned. Despite that, this is a great shot....and a very interesting lesson. I have enjoyed both!
