Taken in local park last Sat. A large number of various birds visit this tree in summer for berries. This is the cloeset JWE I ever have. Cropped 20% off original. Thanks for viewing.

Subject: Japanese White Eye Zosterops japonica (simplex)
EOS 10D, EF100-400 L IS USM @400mm, Handheld, Metz 54MZ3.

This bird in known as a silvereye in Australia. No an easy subject surrounded by all the foliage.
Comments and reposts welcome

We have Z. lateralis lateralis down here. Sometimes we call them waxeyes, sometimes white-eyes, sometimes silvereyes, some call them blightbird, and some tauhou :?
It appears your JWEs are a bit more shy than our, um, whatevers. Sometimes 300mm is too much!
The bright background is a bit distracting, but you probably couldn't do much about it.
Show us some more :)

Welcome aboard! These are such pretty little birds and so difficult to get with a clean background. In this situation, a flash as main light shot while underexposing the foreground would avoid the burn't out sky.

Thank you all for your comments. Acutally I think my Metz cannot reach that far, so a flash extender should have been used.

Griffin,

Welcome and thanks for posting! I think under the circumstances given you did about the best you could have and resulted in a good documentation of the species. It looks similar to our white-eyed vireo Vireo griseus over here in the states.

As for the flash comments I think using flash here would have been problematic with all the foreground vegetation and would have resulted in some well-lit leaves and lots of un-natural looking shadows. There just isn't a clear enough shot for it to have worked in my opinion.

I'm looking forward to seeing some more birds from your area and hope to see you posting more in the future!

I know well the gratification of finally getting a recognizable image of a difficult bird. Here you can easily ID hte species, and from your description that alone is an accomplishment. Keep after it!

Cute little bird! While it's a little lost in the leaves and the sky is pretty bright, it's great to see this species and I'm glad you shared it. Looking forward to more posts!

Just a note - Japanese White-Eye and Silvereye are different birds with non-overlapping ranges, albeit of the same genus.

Sorry - I just can't help chipping in stuff like this :? .
