Known as the Slavonian Grebe in Europe.

A summer plumaged bird photographed in Saskatchewan, Canada. The bird was one of two on a small farm dug out.

Provia 100.
700 mm (probably, if not 500 mm) either wide open or 1 stop down which would make it somewhere between f4 and f8 depending on which focal length it was.
Gitzo 340 and A-S B1. I would normally have used my Gitzo 410 and A-S B1g but the smaller Gitzo and and A-S head is 4 inches lower when the tripods are both fully splayed. I also stomped the tripod legs into the mud to lower the tripod a couple more inches.

The photo was taken in the late spring, the brown reflections on the water are actually a stack of weathered straw bales and a corral fence behind the dug out. I have closer shots of the birds but this is the only frame from several hours shooting with the dappled brown and blue reflections.

This is the full frame, on the original you can see the creamy yellow inner ring of the birds red iris, detail that a 4,000 p.p.i. scan is only just starting to resolve. I'd like to scan this slide on the new 5,400 p.p.i Minolta scanner at some point to see if it can resolve the detail in the birds iris.

This is definitely a beautiful bird, and the colors in the water are really neat. I think if the bird was headed more towards the camera (looks slightly turned away) it would have even more impact. What an opportunity to photograph this grebe, I have never seen one in person before but hope to someday!

The water is great and I like the DOF display, shows well. Love the electric eye.

Interesting effect. I feel detached from the bird as it moves away, and the water is rather overwhelming. But I do like the colors!

One of the most beautiful birds in my opinion and taken in some very dramatic light. A slight turn back of the head would improve it.

I have never seen water this color before....very nice. I wish he was either headed toward you or at least had given you a look which has already been mentioned. Still, a good shot.

Seems small in the frame but that still works too. I really like the color of the water.
