Herring Gull, Larus argentatus, juvenile bird, first year summer, Waddenzee region, The Netherlands, Eos 3 + 400/5.6L, sensia 100, handheld, full frame, usm

I was wondering what you think of a shot of a flying bird taken from below. This shot was taken from a boat where the gulls fly by or over you. I think it's somewhat different, but I'm not sure if this really works. I'm not sure about the 'downwards' look of it.

Any ideas, suggestions???

Peter, a nice image with fine detail on the underside of the wings. I find the view from below somewhat disorienting, especially since the head is past you. A mild cyan cast is noted. The orange frame is distracting.

Hi, Peter.

My first reaction was that I hope you're using a filter!

Well, art is subjective, but this is a bit disorienting to me as well. Some of the overhead shots I've seen that work well have the bird looking at the camera - something that connects the viewer to the subject. There seems to be artifacts from USM around the bird.

I think it's great that you're being creative and hope you keep at it!

Peter,

Good detail and I might not mind the view but as it is, I get dizzy looking at it. Probably because the head of the bird is past.

Interesting shot with some good underwing detail. A slight cyan cast as noted which could be easily fixed with some levels adjustment in PS.

My first reaction was sort of like Heather's, except mine was: "Hope you were wearing a hat!". Interesting diagonal composition. Looks like the whites are a little off.

An interesting study of this bird - very different. The colors are way off and heavily oversaturated in magenta and cyan.

Thanks guys.

I didn't realise that the colours were so bad. I do as less as possible with the scans as I do all of the work on a laptop. I have to wait for the results on my normal screen at work.

As this is not one of my own scans I'll try this again in the future. Nobody mentionned off colours in my own scans..

Thanks also for your opinion of this view. It is different because it has passed. Otherwise it would be a familiar shot again. Every time I'm on a boat to one of our islands I try to do gull flight shots. Last weekend wasn't very successfull I think, but I will see the results tonight.

Cheers

Peter

I would try this on rotated in every direction. Is there one that looks more correct? If the bird had been looking at you, rotated 90 CCW would have worked.
